I dont need a keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

Main importance is a good video card

I will be using it to run mainly steam, AIM, MIRC, and ventrilo

that should get you started those prices are from newegg for a reference
if you shop around you can probably find most of these parts cheaper

if you overclock you should drop down to a 3200 or a 3000
2 gigs of ram seems like a overkill but 1 gig doesnt seem to be
cutting it anymore

If it were me, I'd pick two of these Crucial PC3200's instead (these are what I got, anyway). Don't forget WinXP OEM if you plan to run WinXP.

take what gadzookie said, just get a 3000 venice, 1gb ram, and a 7800gt

Yeah, get Gadzookie's system listed above, except switch out the 3500+ for a 3000+/3200+ and overclock, get the Crucial RAM (ValueSelect is getting awfully expensive...), and try to dish out a bit more money for the X800GTO2 for about ~$190. You can unlock and overclock the X800GTO2 to X850XT PE levels easily! $190 for an X850XT PE = t3h win

yes see if you can get a gto 2 if you can squueze it in but 900 bucks is going to be tight :-(

and now that 2 gigs sticks are getting populer it seems there raising the price !
i rember when 2 gigs of corsair value ram was about 160 !!!!!
