can somebody check my parts list please?

Hi, I'm a new user here. Trying to put together a new machine for home use. Besides the usual, I want to do some video editing (home movies, nothing professional). This is the first time I'll be assembling a machine. Can you please take a look at this parts list and let me know if something looks incompatible or can otherwise be replaced with a better alternative? I already have a new Sony DVD-RW and the monitor will be a DELL 19 Flat Panel. All other parts are listed as under (am I missing anything?):

QUESTIONS:

1. Is a 10,000 rpm drive worth it or should i just get a 7200 drive?
2. is a separate sound card really required?
3. Is the mobo in my list overkill?
4. I'd like to ideally shave off $200 from this list. What part(s) should I 'downgrade'?
5. Am I missing anything here besides the obvious keyboard/mouse?
6. Is a separate cpu cooler required or will the one included with the cpu be good enough?
7. I hope I don't get ****** trying to put this thing together

Are you overclocking at all? 10,000RPM HDD's are good if your only working in XP, but the 7200RPM drives are enough. Other than those quick questions... looks good.

no overclocking. I'm not really a tech head. I just want to put together a good machine and forget about tweaking it for at least 3 yrs. Besides the usual, I'll be editing home movies from a camcorder, burning DVDs, manipulating large files, listening to music....

The diff in price between 10k rpm and 7200 rpm are substantial, so i'm wondering if i should just get a 7200 drive. yes, i'll be working in XP Pro.

1. Get a good 7200rpm drive you wont notice the difference
2. No but your music might sound a bit better with a basic creative audigy in it
3. If you not bothered about SLI yes unless it has other features you want or the price is close (only know UK prices of stuff)
4. If you can get a cheap opteron from somewhere and overclock that may help save money, get some normal ram as well good quality value ram should be fine
5. Not sure depends if you need anything else for your editing
6. Depends how much you are overclocking - Stock cooler good for stock and mild overclocks unless temperatures are bad
7. Lol it is not that hard to build a rig

Get a good 7200rpm drive, and use the money to get a dual core (AMD Athlon X2) processor.

Does anyone know what's the diff/pros/cons of RAID vs SATA? After some mulling, I think i wanna get a 50gb boot drive and another 300gb drive for storage.

does the case+psu look ok/sufficient or should i get a 500w psu?

7200 HD, the mobo is overkill. probably can cut your costs $200 there. or you could always upgrade your cpu instead

Ok cut back on that mobo- go with a DFI Ultra-D, that'll save you 100 right there. That Hard Drive is Overkill. Just go with a standard OEM WD 120 gb 7200 RPM.

Right there you saved $300. Use that money on something more important. I would take that money and go with 2 gigs of RAM. And if you can afford it up your processor a little bit- dual core is the way to go. That heatsink for your CPU would be if you wanna OC, stock heatsink will be fine. Also you might wanna look at some different cases/PSU. That was my biggest mistake on my first build, I went with a midtower and I had heat problems- plus when it came time to upgrade I felt constrained for room.

In terms of what you are missing?

IDE cables
Arctic Silver 5

Also a seperate sound card is not required unless you are going with a 5.1 speaker system or something, the DFI Ultra-D has excellent onboard sound. I have always been a critic of soundcards as I feel it is the very last thing you should upgrade unless you are an audiophile.

Thanks for the input guys. I made some changes to my list - dual core CPU, non-SLI mobo, 7200 HD, 2gb RAM, sound card etc.

I don't feel too confident about the case/psu though. Can somebody help me with a good reco? Something that's really quiet and cool. Also, is there any other better/cheaper 19" flat panel monitor besides DELL that I'm considering right now?

Motherboard: Looks a bit cheap, I would get an Epox 9npa+Ultra
Graphic Card: Great!
CPU: Get an Opteron 165, the extra cache will help when manipulating large files
RAM: I would get a kit that comes with 2 sticks, instead of getting 2 separate sticks
Hard Drive: Looks great!
CD Drive: You don't need two
Sound Card: Definetly worth it!

EDIT: Oh yeah the monitor. If you are going 19", I would say get the Samsung 940B? (It was either 940B or 940T, can't remember). I would highly reccomend getting a 20" Widescreen. The Dell 2005FPW to be prescise.
