I'll agree that most things we call acronyms are just initials. Scuba is a acronym, but how do you pronounce YMMV? yum-va? LOL, however can be an acronym. When I read it I think lowell or somesuch, not L-0-L. Immhoe, with the prominence of name/phrase reduction due to things like instant messaging and messageboards, we need to revise the definition of acronym to include abbreviations and initials. Again that's IMHO.
