can running a monitor above the manufacturer recomended refresh rates really damage it?

i'm currenty running my samsung 900NF at 1280x960 @109.8hz. if i go any higher the OSD gives me a sync out of range error so i know the monitor is aware of what i'm running it at. does samsung only go up to 85hz in the specs for compatability reasons or is there good reason for it.

I've had two monitors here, a Viewsonic (sux), and a Samsung.. Both running at 100Hz for nearly 2 years, WAY above the max recommended in Windows.

No troubles, no failures, no issues...

Guess your questions probably already been answered. But any recent monitor will just not display if it gets a signal out of its range. I do remember back when it was a problem(especially with non-multisync) and you would get some crazy displays/sounds when trying different a refresh.
