Can router and switch talk to each other?

Let me explain the small office network I'm trying to set up:

An ADSL connection will come in and be connected to a switch. The switch will go on to the router and distribute access to several Macs and some PCs.

BUT some machines will be connected directly to the switch, as they need a static public IP address.

My question is can the machines connected to the router talk to the machines connected to the switch? If not, is there some special setup I need to go through to make this possible?

First of all, what kind of router do you have? For example, mine is a Linksys router (used at home) that is also a switch as well. So if that is the kind of router you have then yes, you will be able to connect them together. You will need to connect your switch to the router's uplink port, or the router to the uplink port on the switch. I am not familiar with MAC machines. I would recommend that you give static IPs to all computers on the network or let DHCP handle the IPs for all computers, but that sounds like that isn't an option from what you have described. Good luck.

Sure, acces to all servers on the switch will be through the router. Sounds like you will also need some additional security setup for the public IP addressed servers on the switch.
