Can read cd's with Windows 98 but not with Windows XP

I have a number of CD's that when I try to read them withmy Windows XP system, I get the message: data structure is corrupt, the cd cannot be read. Yet I am able to read the same cd with my Windows 98 system. This is not a problem with the cdrom drive as other cd's work just fine. Why would a cd be read without a problem in Windows 98 and not work with Windows XP?
