I just bought a Dell 1600n laser printer. It is connected through my router. I can print from my computer, but from my wifes I can not. I can ping the printer from a command promp, and can hit it from Mozilla. When I try to "add a printer" I get an error message that it cannot find the printer or has lost connection to the server. I have changed IP addresses, rebooted both computers, the modem and the router, reset the printers nic card, set both static and DHCP IP addresses nothing seems to help. Dell is telling me my problem is in the network, and there is nothing further they can do. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Al

i just did this this week.

During the install are you selecting NETWORK INSTALLAION? Do you have the printer hooked up to a pc via the USB cable?

Try just using the the networks neigborhood and connect printer function. that is how i had to do it. I installed it through my server but still could not see if on add printer wizard browse. Had to use network neighborhood and view the pc shared printer and connect to it.

Try that.

Are you tring to install via the standard tcp/ip port? That is the method I would use.
Assuming this is an xp/2k computer:
start/settings/printers and faxes
add printer
next
SELECT LOCAL PRINTER ATTACHED TO THIS COMPUTER!
next
check the box at the bottom, "create new port"

This brings up the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard"
next
put in the IP address you have configured for your printer. do not worry about port name, it will fill that with the IP by default.
next
At this point, it will continue to the part where you select the printer model or you click "have disk".
If it does not find the printer at the end of the tcp/ip port wizard, then there is indeed something wrong.

had a very similar issue when setign up my network printer..

I had shut off the print spool service. It was a stand alone gaming machine at the time of install, and never thought I would need to print from that computer. re-enabling the print spooler services allowed me to add the network printer.

I tried everything, so far, no success. To add further information, When I install from Dell's CD it recognizes the printer right away, tells me that the printer is set up and working, but when I go to print, nothing happens. I have changed the IP address and pinged it with no problem. I have tried using it as a shared printer on the network, I can find it just fine, it just won't print.

Thank you all for your help. Anything I may be missing?

For what it is worth, my network is peer to peer, I am running XP pro and my wifes machine is a Dell SC 400 server running as a desktop with Windows XP home. I am about ready to send this thing back.

I got it working, but not like I wanted to. I had the USB cable disconnected, to make sure I was steing up the printer through the network interface. Since that didn't work, I re-attached the cable and set the printer as a shared printer. My wifes computer was able to see the new printer through the USB connection, so I guess that will have to work for now. Thank you all again for your help.

FYI:

I just upgraded my wifes machine to XP Pro. Printer installed without a hitch.

Thanks Microsoft for your tech support! NOT
