can ping but can't do anything on the internet

he has Charter Pipeline, says everything was working fine until he installed Avast, when it rebooted the net stopped working. I tried pinging different addresses and all of them worked, I can't get on http, or ftp/telnet. He's running win 2k, I uninstalled Avast + Zonealarm just to make sure it wasn't some sort of Firewall issue.

any ideas what I can do to fix this

Check the IE connection settings / Proxy settings ? maybe ZA input some proxy info...

Is he getting an IP/DNS entries from Charter?

YEAH ipconfig is showing an ip and dns info. I tried ftp/telnet to rule out a http proxy issue

Sounds like something I ran into a bit ago. I could ping and what not but the users web browser wouldn't work. I used this program, or one similar.

This worked for me, and he was back on the net. This resets the TCP/IP stack to its original form.

awesome, it worked, this is a program I might never need again but I'm going to add it to my techcd with all my troubleshooting stuff.
