Can people really sleep through a loud buzzing alarm?

This morning, I wake up on one of my friend's couches to find an alarm going off in one of the neighboring rooms. It keeps me up for about an hour until my friend comes out and, at this point, I just decide to head home since I'm up anyway (I crashed last night because I was too tired to get to my place).

Anyway, I mention to my friend that perhaps she might want to turn the alarm off since her roommate's forgot to shut it off before they left, and she responds with: Oh, they are still in there!

How can anyone sleep through a loud, buzzing alarm, for well over an hour, without hitting it off? And how can TWO people do this? It woke me up instantly, and it was in the next room with the door closed and a fan in the room.

I've had this problem my entire life. I've tried the two alarm clock thing too. The bottom line is my body just won't wake up if it doesn't feel like it, regardless of how much sleep I'm getting.

So yeah, people can really sleep through loud buzzing alarms. :)

I've tried 3 alarm clocks, a cell phone, and an alarm that played a Winamp playlist on my PC going off both simultaneously and at staggered intervals, to no avail. :)

I've also had alarm clocks + my roommate violently shaking me = FAILURE, also.

I figure I must have some kind of narcolepsy.

Here's a tangent; I hope hope there's a special place in hell for those assholes that leave their alarm on when they travel out of town.

Yup.

Back on point, when I was in college I could sleep through multiple buzzing alarms. Lost my ability to do that.

I used to get up out of bed, walk across the room and turn mine off, then go back to sleep and not remember any of it when I woke up hours later.

Maybe I'll try this. I'd have to rig something up where I'd wear a wrist strip connected to this thing and have it physically shock me when it goes off in the morning. :Q

too true. I have to move my alarm clock once a month otherwise my sleeping self will learn where it is and turn it off

I also had to find the most annoying alarm ever otherwise I would sleep though it. The sounds is like nails on a chalk board to me but it wakes me up

I have one of those super annoying alarm clocks that is so annoying it wakes you up in an angry mood. :p It goes off at 6:30, 6:45, 7:00, 7:05, 7:10, etc. I usually don't get up till 7:15 after mashing the snooze button enough times that I get up because I'm tired of hearing the alarm and now cannot sleep. Yes, I go to work pissed as hell some mornings :p

thats exactly what i do.. and it doesnt matter what ringer i set as my alarm clock, after a day or two it pisses me off to no end... so don't ever go and take your favorite song and make it your alarm clock, because in the end you will just hate the song (i'm at like 20 songs now that i can't listen to)

That's the way I frequently am. I now set an alarm clock, and have offset the time, which I occasionally change, so I never know *exactly* what time it really is, thinking that might convince me to wake up so I'm not really late for whatever I'm doing that day. I also set an alarm on my cell phone, on an interval just slightly offset from the alarm interval on my alarm clock. Some days I just don't hear them ring... or something, idunno. I just know that I miss the time when I was supposed to be up, the alarms have been sounding or are already disabled, and I don't remember anything.

On days when I really need to make sure that I'm up, I schedule a windows task to play back some music at 75% volume. Thus far, that has always made me wake up... but it also wakes up everyone else in the house, and can be heard hundreds of feet outside of the house. If I leave it at a more reasonable volume, I sleep through it.

I'm the opposite. I wake up from a toilet flushing or a door being closed from far away.

It sucks.

How dramatic. Was an attempt made to resuscitate?

Back in college my freshman year in the dorms, my roommate bought his alarm clock based on decibel rating. He'd set it every day for his 8am class, never woke up to the alarm, I'd have to hit him or something to wake him up - then he'd just shut off the alarm and skip his 8am class EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I decided to switch away from buzzing alarms when I would wake up to them, stare the clock knowing it should be buzzing, because of the time and the fact I'm awake, but actually not hearing anything!

Same here. The lightest sound and I'm awake. Light sleeping ftl. I guess if someone breaks in I'll know ahead of time (could be good or bad)..
