Can or should a fan be lubed? If so, with what?

😕 I've got lots of fans lying around that still spin fine, but have gotten a bit of play in their bushings or bearings or are a bit loud. Some of them seem like they would be fine if I could find a way to get some lubricant into them. I know I saw one guy selling some kind of fan that he said was freshly-oiled. Does anyone know how to go about lubing a fan and what type of lubricant would work best? I'm throwing together a junk system to use as an internet gateway from parts I have lying around and would like to use some of my old fans in it. Any ideas?

Cool, thanks. I think my vote goes to the guy in the discussion section who recommended the dry Teflon-based lube. I don't want oil/grease flying out of my fan if I use too much - which I almost certainly will. Maybe I can get some at Home Depot.🙂

i always use a tiny drop of "clock oil". as long as you put the sticker back, or put a piece of tape down, you shouldn't have to worry about the lube spraying out.

Don't overdo the tape - it'll slow down the fan.

BTW, you guys shouldn't do this, but I rejuvenated an almost-dead fan with... canola oil. No jokes.
