can one be infected by copying a file only?

does anyone know if one can only be infected upon execution of a file or can the mere act of copying a file from one location to another also suffice?
 
It has to be executed. Either by you or a browser or some other app (like the email HTML preview pane). That's why just getting an email doesn't automatically infect you even though the virus is on your hard drive. Something has to execute the virus to get that code running and copying doesn't execute any code, just copies bytes from one plave to another.
