my sister left some unopened cans of soda in my car on wednesday night, and I didn't touch the car until yesterday evening...turns out due to the heat (only explanation) the cans exploded, and the vinyl was all sticky :( I don't see much damage to the cloth seats though (the cans were on my bookbag, so a lot of it was soaked up by that...

I tried cleaning it as much as I could last night, and today when I went to drive it the damn gearshift is stuck like hell :|

I'm pretty sure honda won't cover this, so does anyone know how hard it is to actually remove the top cover of the shifter in an '03 civic (auto tranny)?

to deal with the inevitable stains and smell, pick up some Nature's Miracle at your local pet store. It will enzymatically break down the soda so that your upholstery and carpets aren't totally ruined. Good luck with the rest of it...

Ugh, that sucks.

One time, I went to Sonic and got a Route 44 cherry limeade. I put it in the cupholder. As I was leaving, I had to stop short. The cup tipped forward and dumped a fair amount of soda into the gearshifter. PITA to clean up.

Did the same thing a month after I bought my car, except with a chocolate shake. I never knew the shifter housing would be so hard to take apart.

1) Take it to a car detailing place
2) Pay them $50-75 to clean it
3) Drive home in a nicely cleaned car!

have your honda dealer detail your car and tell them your problem. they'll clean it up, but for a price.

I think that's what i'll end up doing..i'm trying to do a meticulous job of cleaning everything, but even the volume/air control knobs are sticky :( Hopefully it is only in the $50-$75 range..

Thanks for the useful tips (well, everybody except fivespeed5 ;)

If you can afford to, you might look into getting your interior Teflon coated in case this happens again. When I bought my car, the credit union that I financed it through gave me a certificate to get my paint and interior Teflon coated. Paid $100 and it's been worth its weight in gold. I've spilled Coke on the floor and smeared blood on the seats (cut my finger and didn't notice until I got into the car) and it wipes right up, even if you leave the stain sitting for weeks.

Well, in my last car I would have definitely been like that, but this car is sort of the "bastard child" .. after totalling my last car, I bought a '03 civic 5-speed coupe, and being it was my first time driving stick I had a bit of trouble in the beginning on local hilly roads..after contemplating a while, taking into account my amateurish shifting ability, I decided i'd rather learn - however, my dad was always against stickshifts and coupes (for him, a car = point A to point B, nothing more, so in his logic coupes make no sense - even if i'm usually driving alone), so he kind of forced me into trading it in for a 4door sedan/auto (EVEN THOUGH I was paying for it; thing was, I was using his good credit to get the 1.9% financing for 60months). In the end, the deal was I would not pay a single penny for this car if he traded the 3 day old coupe in for the sedan. He would do anything to get his way, even lose ~$17.5k...oh well.

I used to treat this sedan rough, but knowing my cheap father he'll drive it around till it dies (and its hard to kill a honda), so I might as well take care of it and not act like a spoiled brat :)

Same thing happened to me with a can of coke. I forgot I had left it in my car for a few days when it was around 100 degrees. I got in my car and was driving down the street when I heard a loud "pop". I ducked not knowing what it was and I see in the corner of my eye the can of coke fly from the backseat into my windshield and it cracked it in the shape of the bottom of the can. I spent an hour cleaning it but to this day I still find spots where I missed it. Definitly worth paying someone to detail your car to clean it up.

well, i buy both and spill a lot. i just notice sugared cola really is a pain to clean. diet is like wiping water up pretty much.

well, just got a call from our honda dealer...$85+ tax just to take the shifter apart and clean it, they won't clean anything else.. :(

Sooo, i'm thinking of buying some vinyl cleaner from our local walmart and cleaning the rest of the stuff myself..do you guys recommend that, or just water would be fine?
