You have to let the bulb cool down before removing also you can not handle the bulbs with bare hands as oil spots from your fingers can make them break. Those precautions should prevent any exploding bulbs.
. Most projectors have a cool-down mode where the fan is blowing but the bulb is off - that's what you use if the bulb fails and you need to cool it in a hurry to change and get on with the presentation or big game ;) . If your projector doesn't have a cool-down mode, open the bulb hatch and aim any fan you have handy in there.

Do you have a replacement bulb yet? You seem to be concerned that the bulb will explode because it's older than the rated life. I have never heard of that. The bulbs are rated (to my knowledge) because they emit less light after a time. If you are not disappointed in the brightness for whatever reason I can't see any reason to not keep using it until your are dissatisfied with your image.

I'd recommend changing it when it's completely cool. Based on posts above (below for me - I have Anandtech Forums configured to show last post on top!), handle with clean gloves and get no fingerprints on your new bulb.
