Can not enable Automatic Updates: Error 1058

This system had a lot of spyware and viruses, which have been cleaned. But the automatic updates have been disabled by one of the viruses, and I can not enable them. I even went into Services, but I got Error 1058.

I tried this fix, but it says automatic updates are enabled for this profile:

Suggestions other than reinstalling the OS?
 
do you know what disabled it, exactly? I'd do a extremely thorough scan of the drives, and permanently disable system resotre and nuke all of it's backups. I have a feeling something is still running around in your system.
