I guess gas powered is the best eh? Dad has a lot of weeds growing in his yard that are hard to get with the mower. The weeds grow pretty thick, w/staulks as big around as your pinky finger. So I guess I would need a strong machine. Whats a good one to get pls? They oughta be on sale soon too.

I thought they all work the same. Get the store brand. Does Costco make Kirkland Signature weed killer?
 
got an echo years ago and it still runs great!!!! refilling the string is a pain but can not really avoid it. think the trimmer cost like ~$150
 
I've never used an Echo, but I'd love to find something more durable than a Stihl (ok, being sarcastic there). We've had one for over 15 years, and we simply cannot kill it. It's even been run over by the truck a couple of times... never phased it.

The only problem? It's HEAVY. I can't run it for more than 20 or 30 minutes without having to stop for a while... I do have a bad back, yes, but I have *never* lifted any weed eater as heavy as this one.

My adopted dad has two bad shoulders, and has a hard time pull starting anything... he's bought all kinds of weed eaters, and he can't find one that he's able to easily start, and that is light enough for him to carry around and run for 15-20 minutes. Any suggestions there? His weeds aren't particularly big or heavy... they're just in places a mower can't get to. Whenever there's something that requires heavy cutting, I drive up and take care of it for him... with the big weed eater, or a shovel, or an axe... 😀

nope.... a cheap $20 electric corded weed whacker will take down those weeds that are as thick as your thumb.....


I considered getting a gas powered or a cordless electric weed whacker, but instead got 100' cord that could reach my entire property 🙂

QFT. Electric weed whackers are useless and they have the durability of a Yugo.

Gas is the only way to go!

The one Im currently using was bought in 1974 by my in-laws
 
I bought a Poulan (They bought WeedEater) and I love it. It can "twist" to become an edger as well. I cant remember the model number off hand but if you are interested I can tell you tonight.
 
We bought some Stihl FS120s at work. The 4-mix is a cool thing... uses mixed gasoline/oil for fuel like a 2-stroke, but is actually a 4-stroke. Runs quiet, is powerful, good overall.

Although, if you can find some Honda weedeaters, they are excellent. Honda small engines are second to none.
 
The electric yellow one I bought at Costco works real well for around home. I use it hard & it's still ticking after 3 years. Brand: "Yardman". It was around $80 or $90, plus around $15 for a real long heavy extension cord at Home Depot.

It's surprisingly powerful, & does a good job at lawn edging too.

The gardner guys around here who do serious weed whacking use gas powered ones with a triangular steel blade instead of cutting line, but I've never owned one like that. I suppose that'd be better, because you could probably trim bushes with it too. I've seen brands STIHL & Huskvarna.

But they're expensive & need maintenance. Mine: yeah it's electric, which is badmouthed in posts above, but real powerful, no maintenance, if it breaks no great regret to toss & get a new one.
