Can Macbook Pro play Blu-Ray movies

Has anyone invented a solution to have Macbook Pro to play blu-ray movies through an external optical drive? I currently don't own a Mackbook (I owned one last year), but was wondering what options I will have. Anyone succeeded?

The macbook is just like the PC in terms of Blu Ray playback. Due to licensing issues, you must purchase software that has blu ray playback/license functionality. There is no OS that i'm aware of that includes this for free due to licensing costs.

Generally speaking you can get software such as PowerDVD for windows for BR playback, but none of it is free for either OSX or Windows, and likely never will be. You must pay for the privilege, so to speak. That said, some external Blu Ray drives may include software for playback as part of the price, but most do not.

I understand that I will have to have a playback software (user license) to play blu-ray movies, but I just checked cyberlink website and that the PowerDVD 13 Ultra supports the following OSes:

Operating System

  • Microsoft Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista and XP SP3* (Windows XP Service Pack 3 is required)

There is no mention of Mac OSX. How can you play blu-ray movies on a Macbook?

EDIT: Oh wait I think I found one.

Would that work?

Yeah that'll work. There are a few programs that have a 3 month free trial as well, If you look around.
Thanks 🙂 Looks like I have some good options here. I'll probably add an external USB Blu-ray drive to the system and software playback.
