Hi all,

I am going to purchase the Samsung Syncmaster 713N but my Pentium 3 800 MHz system with ATI Radeon 7200 graphics card is running win98se. Any potential problem with that? It has a 8 ms response time and I heard that this is good for games. The max resolution for this monitor is 1280 X 1024. I want my desktop to be this resolution but when I play games, I want a lower resolution of 800x600 or 640 x 480. Will this be possible?

Thanks a lot,
Ng Kai Meng

Thx all for your speedy reply! When Kensai says it is possible, do you mean that my native resolution can be 1280x1024 but when I play games in 640x480 or 800x600, my video performance will suffer? I have read that text can only be seen clearly using the native resolution but it is not so good for other resolutions. What about games? Has anybody tried. Anyone using win98se and a LCD? Whats your experience like?

No your performance will not suffer. Yes you should always have your desktop as 1280x1024 with an LCD and games aswell but your video card is pretty bad so you should use a lower RES. I have a Samsung SycMaster 710v and my experience of this monitor is EXCELLENT. I have had 4 monitors and this is the best one i have had.

Dumb advice. You assume that everyone in the world has or will have an SXGA LCD.

Well, the games I play includes Warcraft 3 : Frozen throne and Medieval Total War Viking Invasion. I play these two game at a resolution of 800x600 32 bit colour and it is fine on my 15 inch Viewsonic CRT Monitor. I wonder how they will turn out on a 17 inch LCD though.

Yes. As long as you use the native resolution it'll look great. My grandma has a craptastic Kogi 17" monitor hooked upto an old Win98 machine. It looks horrible at 1024x768, but when I'm there, I up the resolution to 1280x1024 and it looks as good as any other LCD.

Thx for the reply. Has anyone seen a game run in non-native resolution? I know text will be blurred in a non-native resolution but what about games? Thanks.

Games won't look great on non native res but it's not really that bad. In dark games like doom 3 i could barley tell the difference

Wtf why are you getting such an expensive monitor if you can't even play games at that resolution? You'd be better off using the money to get a better video card.

Yes you can, but for better picture quality, use graphics card that have a DVI connector, and connect it to the LCD monitor's DVI port.

Also set the resolution to the LCD monitor's native resolution, ie 17in LCD monitors usually should be set to display 1280 X 1024.

I will be getting a better graphics card and a better processor later, but I wanna get a LCD soon. Right now, the games I play does not requires such a high requirement. I believe I can get a much better system if I upgrade later, at the same price. I think I will be getting the 17 inch Samsung 713N LCD. I think it looks cool and it sell for S$429 only in my country, that is about US$260. It is a very good price. Besides there is a IT exhibition coming soon on 2 - 5 June in my country. May be able to get it for much lesser.

Yeeeeeah, I bought the Samsung 713N LCD monitor. I am now using it at 1280x1024 resolution and win98se. The words look crisp on this page. I tried playing Medieval : Total War just now at 800x600 and it worked fine. Thank you for all your help!!!
