Can Intel easily produce Core 2 CPUs back in 2000

I was wondering what if the Core 2 architecture was introduced back in 2000 instead of Netburst. I believe Intel should have no problem squeezing Core 2 into a 180nm die by making it single-core and cutting back the L2 cache to like 256KB. The 14-stage pipeline should be enough to reach ~1.4GHz or so, and would obliterate any AMD offering.

Ah, the "what ifs".

EDIT: ARGH WRONG FORUM

in 2000, no. that was pentium 3 time back then. and core2 is a widened pentium3 with deeper registers and bigger caches. or something like that.

That is like saying...what if Ferrari was able to make the Enzo in 1939...well without the carbon fiber body...but the same engine ...
