Can I use this RAID Setup?

Hey,

I have an iDeq 200N that has SATA Raid capabilities. I am running a Maxtor 120gb DiamondMax Plus 9 IDE hard drive in it right now. I also have a spare Abit IDE->SATA converter. I was wondering if I were to use that converter on my current drive and buy a Maxtor 120gb SATA drive, could I run a sucessful RAID setup? I've heard RAID really boosts performance, would this upgrade be worth the $100 for the new drive? And could I buy a different brand 120gb SATA drive and run it sucessfully, or should I stick with Maxtor. Thanks in advance.
