Can I use SATA and IDE Hard drives at the same time?

I'm going to be building a new computer in the next few months. The only thing I would like to use from my current pc is a Maxtor DiamondMax10 200 gig IDE hard drive. The drive is used as a storage drive only on my current system.

My question is:

Would I be able to run a new SATA drive as the master drive and run the IDE as a slave storage drive? If this is possible would I be able to keep all the data that is currently on the IDE drive or would I have to format it?

Thanks

Both drives will be master drives because they will run on a different bus. You should be able to boot from the SATA drive and use the IDE drive as a storage drive.

Yes, and yes. Depending on what chipset you have, it may even be possible to RAID the SATA drive with the IDE drive...not that there'd be any reason to, but you could is you wanted to.

Just make sure you have the right SATA drivers on a floppy and hit F6 when installing windows. (if your using the IDE for backup and SATA for OS)
