Can I use my old HD in this new system

I'm putting together a new system, it will utilize a new Serial ATA Hard Drive. I would like to use my old 80GB drive as a back up in this new system. Would you use a new serial connector for the new drive and an old ribbon cable for the older drive? It's one of the new Intel based PCI-e motherboards 925CX. Any experiences or details would be appreciated...............

i just put together a system that uses the 915 chipset..PCI-E.. i used the IDE for a DVD/CD-RW and DVD-+RW but you could use it for a hard drive or on the board i had it also has 2 IDE raid so you could use them for the hard drive...so basically as long as it has IDE channels on the board you are set. which motherboard are you planning on getting?

Yes. Serial hard drive would connect to SATA connection. Use IDE connector for your older IDE hard drive.

would the old IDE be set as master, if there is only one? do the SATA drives have to be set as master and slave?

for example, can you have on SATA drive (boot with OS), and one IDE older drive as extra storage (set as master or slave)?

thanks.

I used Intel systems since '88, I've just had good results.

I wanted to hook up these 3 devices
80GB IDE 7200 rpm HD
Lite-On® 16x DVD Drive
Lite-On 52x32x52x CD-RW

Motherboard
ASUS "P5AD2-E

IDE: 1x ATA 100 by ICH6R, 2x ATA 133

80GB on the primary IDE of the ATA133
16x DVD Drive and CD-RW on the secondary ATA133

go into the bios and set it to boot off the SATA drive

no worries.. i just set up the ASUS P5GD1 for my boss.. nice motherboard.. 4 SATA, IDE RAID.. from what i hear the P5AD2-E is a solid board.

Yes, I have my one storage IDE set as master but it really depends on what your BIOS likes (some like it set to CS "cable select"). I don't believe SATA's have master/slave settings - at least mine don't. Set up which is the primary drive in the BIOS. By the way, at least with my MSI board, it is best to set up your SATA with operating system first - installing the storage IDE later as there will be no confusion where the operating system goes.

Hope this helps.
