Can I use iTunes to load to a non-Apple MP3 player?

I love iTunes. I've heard it uses a lot more resources than other music software, but the layout and the ease of use is great.

I want to get a MP3 player, but I really dont feel like buying an iPod for $300. My question is if i bought a Creative/iRiver/Samsung/Sony/whatever branded MP3 player would I still be able to use iTunes to just drag and drop into the MP3 player? Or being it's in a different format would I have to use different software to convert it into another format and then load it?

I have no idea, and I thought i'd ask here for help. Thanks!

Ok, thanks.

So i guess any on those list will just show up on the iTunes menu so i can drag and drop them then right?

Nope, you can load it in a number of ways. Winamp, foobar and WMP (possibly others) have available plugins allowing you to use those programs to do it, or you can use a standalone program like Ephpod.

I don't understand why people hate iTunes. It's so functional.

I hate itunes 🙂

Can i use a simple program like Explorer to place stuff on an Ipod? You know, copy and paste? That would rock...

Nope. Almost everything except ipods support this.

I tried ephPod with my Nano when I first got it and it didn't work well. It kept locking up and couldn't successfully transfer all of my music. I also try the foobar plugin which didn't work that well either.

I just use iTunes now, but I would like someone to tell me why it's so awesome. I find that when I go from Windows to Mac software, I'm left with a feeling that I SHOULD be managing every aspect of the program when I don't need to be. I end up overlooking very simple and obvious functionality because I'm stuck in my Windows-user mindset.

I honestly don't understand the interface though:
Why is there a 90's Music playlist by default? That's about half my music collection. The other half is 80s.
What's so fancy about it? Playlists on the left, songs on the right? Foobar is the same.
What happens if I let iTunes automatically manage everything? How can it possibly know what I want to listen to?

Personally I like having direct and easy control over my music; I don't want some program to tell me what it thinks is best for me, or its fanboys telling me that if I disagree, I am wrong. Because they saw the commercials on MTV, which obviously means Apple is infallible

automatically manage means that it rearranges your folders to comply with their ID3 Tags

alright, now i found this Creative Zen Neeon 5 gb mp3 player:

http://www.creative.com/products/produc...13&subcategory=214&product=12214&nav=1

5 gb's of storage is plenty for me, and i can use it to store data on (like a thumb drive i think) and Walmart has these for $170 (much more reasonable than a new iPod). Has anybody heard anything good about this player?

Also, i dont think that the iTunes format will work with this (however, if it does PLEASE let me know!). What's the best format to use that would have high quality sound on my computer and would be compatable with this?

Thanks for all of the help so far!

Winamp + ml_ipod works nicely. Just cant upload videos that way, if you've got a 5Gen.

Can you play .avi, .mpg and .wmv files with a video ipod? And can you also use it to put things like documents, setup files or other backups on an ipod?

I think this might do the job; just found this while surfing today. I haven't used it but this sounds like what you wanted. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/featpw.php

Iirc Anapod isn't freeware; I prefer Ephpod anyway. Regardless, these aren't file managers, they're ipod loaders.

I wonder if Windows Media player 11 is going to support more players, like my older iRiver ihp-120 which, unfortunately, shows up as a "local disk" instead of a "removable disk"

That list was published in 2003 and is for iTunes 4. Assuming you've moved up to the current version 6, I wouldn't trust it. Of course, t's possible they carried the support on and the worst case is you'd just be using another program to sync your music.
