Can I use heatspreaders on single sided ram>?

Can I use heatspreaders on single sided ram>? Would the metal of the heatspreader on the side without the ram chips cause problems?

Why would you need a heatspreader on the RAM?

uhhh..why wouldn't I? If i up the voltage on my ram an OC it...it'll get pretty hot sometimes. Not to mention, it looks nice too and not too expensive. But can I? Can someone answer the question?

I wouldn't do it, you may short one of the circuits on the back side of the ram.

EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I want to say not to do it at all.

Definitely don't do it. If the heatspreader hits any traces on the side of the pcb with no chips, it will cause major problems.

i have heatspreaders on singlesided and no problems whatsoever....

An easy fix to single sided ram and heat spreaders, is to put a peice on non conductive material inbetween the heatspreader and the chip. I have used busted off or chopped toothpicks in the past.

Ramsinks on system ram are completely pointless. No matter what voltage your running, unless you have that ram running at 350+ mhz it's not gonna get hot enough for heat to matter. My 9700 Pro ram runs 310 stock and is fine up to 350 and it's never more then warm to the touch during 3dmark. The heat-spreaders that came on my corsair never even get warm at 200 mhz...

Most Heatspreaders come with double-sided non-conductive Compound Tape so you won't have any problems, least I never have but I doubt if it'll help any as they are mostly for good looks than anything functional...lucky to reduce the chips by more then 1C in temp.

just use artic alumina or the thermal tape that comes with most of these memory heatspreaders

they also sell them with 40mm fans built onto them

Ever feel how hot some soundcard chips get? And nVidia's southbridge on nForce2 boards can get so hot that it can cause audio glitches sometimes; it should probably have a heatsink on it from the motherboard manufacturers.
