Can I use both WEP and WP encrypted access points with my Apple Airport Extreme?

I have an Apple Aiport Extreme ("n" with gigabit ethernet).

Most of the computers have wireless that allows for WPA encryption.

I am trying to reduce wire clutter and want to use an old Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 802.11b wireless access point that only allows WEP encryption with one computer.

Is this possible (combining WPA and WEP wireless connections to a single Apple Airport Extreme)?

Sounds like you want to run both the airport and the linksys at the same time, yes you basically can just put them on different channels. Of course, your security is now just WEP so why bother running WPA on the other nodes?

Only one type of encryption is allowed on any single router? (I only have one wireless router, the Apple Airport Extreme, and various wireless cards in various prebuilt or DIY computers / notebooks around the house. I am just trying to get rid of one cat5 wire run to a particular computer, and was hoping to use an old wireless access point, the Linksys WUSB11 v. 26, rather than get a new one). Sound like I can't do that and keep WPA encryption on everything else (?)

Oh gotcha, you mean a wireless usb adapater, not access point.... That makes more sense. Some routers do allow dual config, but most do not (the ones that do usually have a guest mode which is handled differently). Basically doing what your asking would in affect lower your security to where wep is. I'd just invest in a new usb adapater for that one machine...

Thanks!

As you can see, I don't know much about this networking stuff.
