I have a Tyan Thunder K7 motherboard and am wondering if I can save $$$ and use AMD XP CPUs instead of AMD MP CPUs.

I would like to get two 2400+ and upgrade.

Thank In Advance,
Raoul

Usually you can. Newer Athlon XP are SMP disabled by AMD. You need to connect the last L5 bridge. Older Athlon XPs are SMP enabled. I have 4 1800+ Thoroughbreds that I'm using in 2 Tyan Tiger MP. I don't have any Thunder K7, so I'm not sure if that motherboard's BIOS has any restriction.

There was a report by AKIBA that AMD has a newer packaging for the 2400+ which prevent the simple reconnection of the bridge.. I tried to asked for people who recently bought Retail 2400+ to tell me what they got but no one responded.:(

All of my home machines are dual XP's.:) Check out the link in my signature.

Goodluck.

IsOs, nice rigs!

Thanx for the info.

I had also "heard" that the newer XPs prevented you from using them in place of MPs, even if you reconnect the bridge. Like yourself, I have not been able to find anything concrete either way.

Thanx,
Ross

I personally can't believe that AMD went to this effort considering that they OOPed their MPX chipset not too long ago. To them, the MPX is a completed experiment.

Then again, what do I know?
