Is it possible to use an inverter from one computer on the next or are they designed for specific uses on specific machines? For all you grumpies I know it's a dumbish question but just thought I'd ask anyway...

First of all, I don't think you are talking about an inverter. Laptops come with A/C adapters, which are actually transformers from a/c to d/c. Inverters are devices that convert d/c to a/c.

But, to answer your question, as long as the connector fits and the power rating is within spec, laptop a/c adapters can be cross used. Unfortunatly, the connectors rare are the same.

Unless of course he is referring to the power inverter in the laptop that is for the display.

Good point, Stu - but that would definitely not be considered as a user interchangeable component.

I was referring to the inverter for the screen, the ones that converts the low battery power to light up the screen and that is interchangeable. I am planning on ordering one off ebay but I was just checking to see if I can use a totally different brand or if anybody knew off the top of their head if the screen inverter is brand specific which I assume it would be. I figure if I have one laying around I wouldn't need to worry about ordering one.

Generally speaking, not interchangeable. But, there can always be a coincidental exceoption.
