I am thinking of signing up for Verizon DSL service (available in my area) and am currently running a small network and would like to share the service. What are the things I should know about using a router? Do I have to buy a spefic router that is compatible with their system or just any will do? They seem to be using products from WESTELL. Where can I buy such products? Should I let them know yhat I will be using a router?

I know it seem like so many questions. But this is the only place I know I will get true answers. Educate me please.

Jakki,

Router would work fine for you. I have the SMC Barricade that I use with Road Runner Cable modem. Works great. You might want to make sure you are fairly familiar with TCP/IP protocol setup as you will have to use a NAT router inside the Router to share the connection.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

You can choose Dlink DE701, which has one Wan Port and one Lan Port, it works great, and very simple setup. I help my customer to install this router for business use. Or you can choose DI-704, which has one Wan Port and four Lan ports.
Of course, you have other choice:
SMC Barricade
3Com Home Connector
....
If you have problem, you can email to me.

I, a mere newbie, just installed a Linksys BEFSR41 four port router with 2 PCs on Road Runner. Just one 8 1/2 X 11 inch instruction sheet, 23 easy to follow steps, and your up and running. I couldn't believe that anyone could make it so simple. Buycom sells em for around $120 if you have the right coupon.

for reviews and comparisons of most of the low priced routers. Also a good place to get your education.
