Can I use a regular permanent marker to label CD-R/Ws?

I have used Sharpie's for a couple of years now and I have noticed no adverse affects. I like the fine points. Caveat: some will warn against using them. Some people also advise to use $400 speaker wire :}

Sharpies are fine, I too have used them for years. Never had any problems either, and I really don't see how anyone could since it is only the label side.

sharpie. i do recommend against using the extra fine point, the one with the HARD nub. use the ones with the felt tip.

I use ultra fine point Sharpies myself and I've never had a problem. They do have a relatively hard point, but as long as you don't press too hard, you shouldn't have any problems. I do think it's fairly hard to screw up a cd with a pen, though. I had a rather ignorant friend who used a ball-point pen to write on a cdr. He used enough pressure that you could actually read what he had written in the colored dye stuff looking at the bottom of the cd. Despite the obvious damage, the cd still worked just fine. I wouldn't recommend it, though.

Use a black permanent marker if you want to keep the discs for a long time.

Coloured inks tend to fade after a few years.

AMB: I actually saw a 'sharpie' for the first time last week. My local staples had a few on some sort of display stand

hey you can test out different inks and markers on an AOL cd
only problem with that is that you'd want the aol cd to be jacked up
