I'd like to connect some wired devices (printer, Mac) to a cable modem downstairs, and gain Wifi access at the same time. I understand I can use a WAP/router like the Linksys BEFW11S4 with the modem downstairs, then a bridge like the Linksys WET11 upstairs

effectively...

cable modem -> BEFW11S4 - - - WET11 -> hub -> Mac, TCP/IP printer, etc

but seeing how WAP prices have dropped quite a bit the last several months, it's almost twice as cheap as an ethernet bridge, so I'm wondering, can I save some money and replace the WET11 with a much cheaper BEFW11S4 (or other WAP) in bridge mode...

There is a Wireless Cable/DSL Router (e.g. BEFW11S4).

There is an Access Point (e.g. WAP11).

There is Independent Client Card. (e.g. WET11).

The price of 802.11b WirelessCable/DSL Routers in the ?Gutters? . Access Points, and Independent Client Cards still cost $60-$90.

Two Wireless Cable/DSL Routers can not talk one to the other. Your initial idea of using WET11 is the right solution for your need.
