Can I upgrade my ram on my motherboard?

Would I get into any trouble if I tried to run 3 512 sticks on my DFI lanparty ut-250gb skt 754 motherboard? I already have 2 sticks of hyperx3200 and thinking of getting a hyperx 4000 in the third slot? Is this ok? TIA.

socket 754 doesnt take or use dual channel memory either so you really dont need dual channel either.you can put dual channel in there but wont take advantage of it they way i understand it.

FearoftheNight; The A64 memory controller has certain limitations for single channel memory setups(which all S754 machines have), and you'd likely be running in to one in such a case. Officially, DDR400 speeds are only supported when your memory has a total of 4 "sides"* or less, and everything in excess of that requires a drop to DDR333 speeds.

But, just because AMD only supports DDR400 with 4 sides or less, doesn't mean you can't have more sides/sticks and still do DDR400 speeds. On my 3400+ setup for example, I have 512MB+512MB+1GB(6 sides total) running just fine at DDR400 speeds, and all I had to do was set my memory clock back up to DDR400 speeds after my motherboard automatically downclocked it. So what you want to do is entirely possible, but your millage may vary.

* DIMMs can have chips on one or both sides of the module, making them single sided or dual sided accordingly, with dual sided by far the most common occurrence. You need to add up the number of sides in use to determine if you can do DDR400 in a supported configuration.

Well I got 2 sticks of 512 mb Kingston HyperX. I can't see whether it is single or dual due to the fact that it has the heat spreaders. So my question is can I pick up a third stick? I'm thinking of pickingu p a third stick of hyperX this one at a higher speed. Will this cause any compatibility issues? I'm fine w/ it downclocking? I'll prob upgrade all of them to the higher speed when I have enough $$ to move to x2.

All you can do is try; it may work at full speed, and it will work downclocked.

It will work, just a bit slower. Why not just upgrade to a full 2gb (1gb x 2) and keep the 400MHz Bus Speed?

Virge, would that mean you are overclocking the cpu - the mem controller? I remembered some AMD issues with rma's of burnt chips because of the 200mhz mem timings.

That is why Overclocking is not such a great IDEA. I would rather have a slow newer computer than a computer that no longer functions because it was burnt out.

Also why do people RMA Broken Stuff? They broke why cant they pay for it? It is Abuse and it is costing all of us money! My cpu will cost $20 more next time because some irresponsible jerk did not want to be a man and admit it was his fault.
