Can I upgrade my Dell Latitude D400's CPU? Help?

I have a dated (older) Dell notebook. It's a Dell D400 1.4ghz laptop but for what I do, its ok i guess.

I just use it for email etc but it could be a little quicker.

I've upgraded the 512meg of ram to the max is can use which is 2GB, and I've upgraded the HDD from 40GB to 160GB.

I looked on eBay and I see a bunch of Intel Pentium M 478 pin 400 FSB cpu's, 1.8~2.0ghz for between $10 and 20 $dollars.

Now if you eBay search Dell D400, the CPU's come RIGHT up listed for the D400 and they say it's a replacement for the D400.

However I read other places the CPU is soldered into the motherboard.

I'm trying to confirm one way or the other and if it is soldered, I'm confused why so many people sell CPU's for the D400.

Thanks.

Yeah, I was kinda trying to avoid that unless I was going to install the CPU while I was in there.

I simply can't find a clear answer on Google. I see some people advising what CPU can be used and others saying it's soldered in and like I said, I see Intel Pentium M CPU's being listed FOR Dell D400's on eBay so its confusing.

Guess I will have to open it up. 🙁
