Can I upgrade Mac Os's and still perserve applications and data??

I need to upgrade Mac Os 8.1 to 8.6 so It will play nice with OS 10 on my network (ethernet). Can I install OS 8.6 on top of the current Os (8.1) and still preserve the applications and data like you can in Windows?? any help appreciated Mark
 
Going from 8.1 to 8.6 is pretty much just an update not a whole new OS. Should be able to install right over without losing anything important. Can't exactly say if any settings or prefferences will be changed though as it's been a while since i've done a mac install. But like n0c said, back up anything important.
 
I did 8.1 to 8.5 with no probs... until my SCSI drive died. 🙁

Back up definitely though. By the way, you'd probably get quicker and more in-depth at the MacNN forums.
