Anubis

No Lifer
fixed a friends comp., 1000+ spywares and adawres few virii, fixed all that fine, but IE will just randomally encounter an error and have to close, windows is up to date and such and comp is all clean, is there a way to uninstall IE and then reinstall it?

its not in the add remove programs

Have your buddy dump IE. It's pretty much junk by now anyway. MS has really done almost nothing with it in several years, until SP2, and in my view it's too little, too late. Help him install Mozilla.

If he's really that stupid he probably won't know the difference, it's a web browser not a scientific calculator.

If by dump you mean remove completely, bad idea. You cannot do a manual update through Microsoft's site w/o it.

It takes beaucoup effort to get rid of all of IE, but it most certainly is possible to obtain update files for the Windows OS and for MS Office without using IE; you just can't do updating interactively. I'd just kill all short cuts of any nature leading to IE -- isolate the critter totally, and never update it again. Mozilla is better in just about every way, and in my view, is easier to work in.

I agree.. I use a MOOX build of Firefox exclusively. My point was that you cannot run the update through their auto update feature on the website.

I've been told that you can tell Mozilla to report itself as Internet Explorer when it goes to a web site. This supposedly will then let the Windows update work with Mozilla.

You can get opera to do that too, but it still won't work. Windows update is built into IE, you can't even close IE while windows update runs. Plus, though Mozilla and Opera can say they are something else, I've seen websites still detect what browser you run regardless.

That removes all shortcuts to IE, same with the one below where you see Windows Media player. It simply removes the short cuts and that is all.
