I moved for a job after college. I called my State Farm agent to ask if I need to switch my insurance in my new state. He told me if I can use my family's address back home, I should do that and I can save money. But I'm wondering if I get into an accident in my current state of residence, will that pose any problems? I asked him this very same question but he never replied. I don't know if it's truly ok or if he just wants to keep earning commission.

It all depends on your legal residence. IMO, is the car registered in the new state then you need to carry that states insurance. if it is still registered in your home state then you may be fine with the original insurance.

The latter might be true, but there might be a clause in the insurance - if they found out you were regularly using your car somewhere completely different, you could get screwed.

It was OK when you were a student. Now that you have graduated and are living there you need to update your policy to indicate your new permanent address. You can stay with state farm you just need update your info and pay the correct premium for the new address. I would find a new agent in your area.

Yep. Change the registered address. Hopefully you can still stay on your parents policy so you will receive the multi-line and multi-car discounts.

"parents use state farm since for ever. being 16 here, when I get a car i'll be on their plan.

my dad is an accident attorney and because of this, he recommends state farm and then geico thereafter in 2nd place. he calls allstate, allsnake, because they are very difficult in paying in his cases when the other party is responsible to pay. I think he also says progressive isnt that great, but like others here said, its cheap, and probably is good enough for you guys without huge claims"

I would take a cue from current health care debate; if you are really concerned, get your own policy at your current address.

Otherwise, you may find you have no insurance for pre-existing condition that you didn't even know you had (saw story about insurance denial because of gallstones insured didn't even know were there).

I find it funny that you have to ask random people on an internet forum if you can trust someone...
