Can I transfer files from 2000pro to XP pro?

I have two hard drives and I would like to know if I can back up files and other stuff from win2000pro on one drive, then replace 2000pro with winXPpro on the other drive and then put the back up files and stuff back on the drive with the new O/S?

As long as the files have nothing to do with the OS, it should be no problem. I keep my data files on a separate external drive - and it can be read or accessed by multiple computers, even with different OS's (as long as they can read NTFS.)
