Can I switch from 939 X2 to 775 E8400 without reinstalling XP?

I have an Athlon X2 3800 on an A8N-E and I'm swapping it out for a P5Q-E and E8400. Is there a way I can do this without having to wipe out Windows? I'll probably just reformat but I'm interested in what would be involved to keep the OS.
 
If you can wipe out the hardware profile and uninstall any drivers it should work ok. Personally I think it's the perfect time to do a fresh install.
 
quite often what will work well is to boot into windows in safe mode immediately upon assembly and detect changes in hardware to clean out the old drivers, then reboot install your drivers from the install cd before doing anything else.
