In need to send my IBM Thinkpad T40 in for some repair, the one USB port is munched from travel abuse and the USB hub isn't cutting it. I want to buy a 2nd backup T40 and just pop my current good hard drive into the spare good T40.

My current T40 is running W2K and no problems with the drive. Can I just plug that drive into the spare T40 and it will run the W2K with no issues on booting, bios, partitions etc. I have 3 partitions on my T40 drive now.

Current drive is a 40 gig. PRocessor is 1.5mhz. Ram is 512 for current and new spare can be 512 or 756.

If not do I Ghost my drive onto the new spare drive?

Can a repair center fix my T40 without the hard drive in it?

THanks.

You can swap HDD's easily as long as the hardware is the same. Really as long as your motherboard/chipset is the same it should be fine. You can even swap HDD's with diff mobo's, but it requires a lot of finagling.
