The only problem I have with religious threads, and religious arguments is that people look to religion for answers, instead of using ethics and logic to support their beliefs. Do something because it is just, and right, not because some being in the sky says so.

Not disagreeing Vic, but there is only one group which can be run down here with impunity and that is believers. Try it with homosexuals. Should gays be flamed? Not really. I like an even playing field though.

I don't go around flaming either side. I think it sucks.

For this reason...can't ever have a "normal" debate in a religious thread without a flamesuit. Dabates are good...flames that end up pissing people off...not so good.

Philosophically I could say that if there is no God, then morality is arbitrary. In fact it's an artifice that has no reality. Therefore since things that are unreal I choose to not let influence me I dismiss right and wrong. I choose what is expedient and pleasurable. If I want to kill or rob, what difference does it make? We are going to die and our pointless lives end on this pointless planet in a pointless universe. Nothing matters so do as you please. We are all dead meat anyway.

Now, that is a perfectly logical statement. Is it preferable?

Notice I said ethics and logic - not one or the other. A good mixture of both is best.

Ethics is a moral concern though, and therefor completely subjective. In objective terms it is meaningless because in objective terms EVERYTHING is meaningless.

Not trying to start a fight and because I can put forward a point doesn't mean I follow it, but one thing religion does is that it gives reality to ethical issues. Now is it really real? That depends of course on if they are right. I don't pretend to know the answer.
