Can I skip the 'pencil trick' and just FSB-OC?

With the new KT133A boards having such flexible FSB's, could I just use a 700 T-bird at 7x133? has anyone done this?

I'm not aiming that high-I've only got about $800 to build a complete system, w/o monitor. Even a 900 T-bird is pushing the limit of my budget. I'm also concerned that some people have had trouble getting their mobos to handle multiplier adjustments-especially on the Iwills, it seems. And I've seen people complain that the 'pencil trick' wore off, etc. I also see alot of people using 7x133 anyway. On the other hand, finding someone who has an Athlon-700 actually in-stock could be problematic

Why not just get a cheap Duron and overclock it to 900? Hard to beat that for $55. BTW pricewatch.com shows several places that have the 700 in stock running around $85.

i have my 1ghz at 1.121 ghz just by upping the fsb from 100mhz to 112mhz... stable as can be

As long as you get an Iwill mobo that is revision 1.1, you shouldn't have any problems. The 1.2 revision seems to be causing all the problems. I'm running a KK266 at 9.5x146 and stable as all get out.

You certainly can up the FSB. A friend has an 850 that is overclocked to about 977 by upping the FSB to 115. You should be able to get 100mhz out of upping the FSB easily. Additionally, if you are just going to do a mild overclock (<150mhz) upping the FSB will yield better results than changing the multiplier. My Duron 700 runs faster at 825 (7.5 x110) than it does at 850 (8.5x100). You probably should experiment with some different combos to see what the best result is. But, if you don't want to mess with a pencil or conductive pen, upping the bus will work quite well.

There are no guarantees that a 700 (7 x 100) will run at 7 X 133. What you might need to do is give it a voltage boost at startup. If that's the case you'd need to connect the L7 bridges, and if you're going to connect the L7s you might as well join the L1 bridges while you're at it.

the kt chipset dont like fsb overclocking.. u wont go as far. just go multiplier. its the fastest way. =)

But he's talking about the KT133a chipset which is supposed to fully support 133 MHz FSB as opposed to the plain old KT133!
