Can I shorten my ATA-100 Rounded cable...

I currently have a 2 connector 18" ATA-100 cable running to my IBM 75GXP HD. I only need one connector and half the length of the cable. The rest is waste. Is it possible to cut the cable just after the middle connector and remove the top connector, basically making it a 12" single-connector cable, or will that screw something up?

Just curious. Thanks.

For that matter, does anyone even sell rounded ATA66 cables with only two connectors (one for mobo and one for drive)? I'm thinking of going with a 3ware card instead of Promise should I use RAID in my next system. I believe the card comes with two-connector cables, but they certainly aren't rounded.

Good question. I have been looking for a single 12" ATA66 cable as well. I believe that one could make them as I remember reading about how one can cut off unused parts of the cable when I made my first round IDE cabling. I know that ATA33 cables with only 2 connectors exist as I have one, but it is rather old so I only use it for my CDROM. I believe FoxConn made it.

I've shortened them without experiencing any problems. The trick is to get a good, clean cut. The best tool I've found for the job is the Craftsman "Handi-Cut".
