A few things to consider...

They need a NT based kernel OS i.e. NT4, Win2000, XP
They need to have the messenger service running
They need to not be blocking the ports on a firewall already, many people already are to stop the messenger spam

If you are good to go then open up a command prompt and type

net send ipaddress text

Sub the actual ip for "ipaddress"and your message for "text" in the above example.

I believe there's a modification you need to do to a certain setting in the IP address configuration of your internet connection to make it work properly, so you can trick the Windows Messenger Service (not to be confused with MSN messenger) to send a message to another computer not on the LAN. Needless to say, since there is already enough Messenger spam in the world, I'm not going to disclose the details. If you're that intent on doing this, you can search for them yourself. :frown:

I know you can send one to a Linux machine if it has software running to listen for it. By default, you cannot. I don't know about OSX. Do people turn off their machines at night? If so, that might be the best time to commandeer your old IP address back.

Do you know what its network name is? If so, use the net send command to send a message to their_computer_name like this:

net send their_computer_name Give me back my fvcking IP address!
