I beat it don't want it anymore, is it possible to unregister it or let it be able to be used by someone else?

Yes, you can sell it along with the steam account and password.
But if you have other games on that account, such as CZ, HL or CS, I think you're screwed.

So if you buy it retail, you still can't sell a used copy because the key is forever locked to your steam account? That's not cool.

Dumb (hl2 noob) question:

Is HL2 a pay-monthly game? Or are there free servers all over the place?
Can someone summarize the whole "steam" thing? Can I buy and play the game anonymously?

Thinking about getting this (when the price drops substantially)....

No monthly fee. just the one-time price when of buying the game.
The answer to each of your other questions is YES.
STEAM is a game management/authentication tool for games made by valve.
You can download it now or as part of installing HL2, once you get it.
Steam with your internet connection is required to authenticate/register the game to an email address of your choosing. After that, you can play offline for single player, but if you play on any if thousands of (free) servers on the internet, you will connect via Steam. It is only as anonymous as your email address.
of course an infinite number of email addresses are available for anyone via hotmal/yahoo, etc.

Wow, that would really suck. I could understand about not being able to sell the version sold thru Steam, but not the retail versions.
