can I sell my brothers car?? EDIT: a new twist

z0mb13

My bro is leaving the country in a few weeks..

I am thinking of selling his car for him (and get the money 😀)

But the title is in his name... am I still able to sell it??

EDIT:
:| I just found out today that my bro owes the county about $1000, I dont know what its about since he left the country already.
My question is: Does this affect my ability to sell the car?? (since its still in his name, but I do have the title). From the letter it only says that his driv license will be suspended, but it doesnt mention anything about his car.

not sure..

but when i got rid of my brothers car.. i signed my name instead of his.. by accident.. the car transferred though.. dont ask me how.

power of attourney.

or fraud.

if you have the title itself in your possession its a lot easier.

well, do u have his permission to sell it?

You sound like you dont expect him to come back...he is really leaving right..you didnt like get 'rid' of him did you..come on you can tell us..we wont tell anyone...😛

Get a power of attorney form from a (tripe) AAA and have someone there notarize it for you. Really simple, he can empower you to sell his car but nothing else. I did it myself about a year ago.

just have him fill out the pink slip before he goes out of the country

Or do that. Depending on your state laws it may also need to be notarized, of course.
Oh, indicate a sale price of one dollar to skimp on taxes.

I am in CA, does it still need to be notarized??

nope, in CA, it doesn't need to be notarized. Just get him to fill out the title of the car, and keep it around till you sell the car. When the new buyer comes, write in the purchase price and mail in the release from liability on the top of the title, and give the new owner the rest of the title. Simple as that 🙂
