Can I run a 1Ghz P3 100fsb chip on my Abit BH6 MB?

Ok I guess im stuck with a 100mhz fsb chip if I still want to run my old Abit BH6 MB(which I do) . It seems that no one can tell me if it will run Ok (since Abit doesnt offically support it) I have heard of others on this board that are running 850 or so but I was wondering if anyone was actually running the 1Ghz slot 1 P3 on theirs ? and if so have you ad any problems ? Thanks

Awhile back in the Hot Deals forum there were many users running a P3-900 at a gig or so. They said all that was needed was a bios flash. Don't see why the 1 gig wouldn't work if the 900's do.

Are you on Team AnandTech? :)

Yup, I run mine @ 850.

Yes the P3 1 gig will work just fine, your MB has the 10 multiplier so its a go.

Just a note, as I understand it there isnt much improvement from 750-1000 as the 100fsb becomes a bottle neck.

Still cool to be @ 1 gig though....

PIII's are multiplier locked.. if you put a PIII 1GHz on a BH6 (100mhz bus), it "WILL" run fine, but at 750MHz.

<<Yes the P3 1 gig will work just fine, your MB has the 10 multiplier so its a go.>>

Sorry man, Intel chips are multiplier locked.. NO motherboard exists that can work around this...

The reason they say the BH6 is limited to 850MHz, is that is the fastest 100mhz bus chip the PIII runs at. anything faster has a 133mhz bus and a lower multiplier.

If anyone is running faster than 850 on a BH6, then they are running an 850 or 800 on a slightly faster bus speed than 100mhz.

my abit bh6 has a max multiplier of 8
and a FSB of 133
so it should support a 1 ghz no prob

Yes, there is a 1GHz P3 with a 100MHz bus. Look at the list of P3s here on Intel's site. Note the SL4KL/SL4BR 1GHz processors and the SL5QW (OEM only) 1.1GHz processor. Both fall under note 4, which says at the bottom, "4. This processor's system bus operates at 100 MHz only".

If your BH6 was the older 1.0x rev, do not upgrade to any CPU which require more than 10A from the low voltage regulator, it'll burn-out, later BH6 revision is possible.

If you find a P-III-1G - 100FSB, with a good Slotket it probably will work.

BH6 has only 1/3 divider on the PCI bus. I would not try 133MHz, unless you have components that you know for sure, capable to tolerate 44MHz PCI Bus (normal bus is 33MHz).

Actually, the BH6 does have a 1/4 PCI multiplier since the PCI multiplier is not tied to the BX chipset. The AGP multiplier is tied to it, however, and thus there is no 1/2 AGP divider. That puts it at 89MHz at a 133MHz FSB.

As I recall, the 133 setting on the BH6 is NOT an Abit supported setting? Sort of....try it...it might work. In fact, I'm thinking they don't support more than 100FSB, even though they have higher nonsupported settings?

Toward the end of its live Abit had ¼ devider in the last revision of the BH6 v1.1

Quote from Abit:

?Since there are two different key versions (One is the version 1.0x series, the other one is the version 1.1 and newer series) it's very important to know how to recognize which mainboard version you have before upgrading your board's BIOS.?

End of quote.

Not too many of this Revision made it out, by that time the BE-6 was already out.

Well, heck. I thought for sure that all BH6's had a 1/4 PCI divider. I just checked on mine and it wasn't there.

To get back to the point the following (for what it worth), is a quote from overclockers.com CPU DataBase.

abit bh6 1.0

P-III 1G Run 1120MHz SL4BR Costa Rica

abit bh6 1.0

using 10*112 bus speed. this motherboard rocks. it was using 300@500, now it overclocks to 1120. won't boot at 124 bus speed. this processor is the last upgrade for this system. worth another 2 years of service. bx boards forever. i got this from techstore.com and at a good price
