short story short: bought expensive tv at BB. opened and used tv. received coupon at CC for same tv at lower price.

what id like to do is get that tv at CC, drive it over to BB and return it. im sure theyd appreciate me returning a brand new in-box tv than a used, open one.... but in your experience would they take it or does it have to be the very very same one i bought from them?

If you wish to play the game of fraud (bringing a new CC item to BB), I can assist you in having time to play it.

Otherwise follow some of the logical advice within the thread.

Can't pricematch? Is it a coupon or a flyer about a deal?

If not ... just suck it up.

4 days tops. its a (single) coupon deal, not regular price, so i dont think i can get them to pricematch.

he wanted to buy a new one from CC using coupon, then return the new one to BB. sounds ethical to me.

Best Buy does not record the serial number of the item you buy. They may check the serial number of the item and make sure it matches the serial number on the box, but other than that I don't see you having a problem.

Go in to Best Buy. Tell them that the price out the door at Circuit City is $X. You want them to match that price. If they don't, tell them that you will be bringing the TV back later that day after you purchase it at Circuit City for $X. If they still don't budge, bring the TV that you purchased at Best Buy back. There is no need to play a game and risk getting in trouble for switching the TV. You are well within your 30 day period and their policy does not apply a restocking fee. You give their customer service person a chance to do the right thing. If it fails, they lose money by selling it as an open box item.

I suppose the worst case senario is you get denied return from bb, and you have to return the new tv back to cc. You lose out on a bit of your time, but other than that, theres no reason not to try.

Happy Axelfox? :p

He's being more ethical than he would be if he returned the one that is already opened. He's trying to help BB, but chances are if he asked them, they wouldn't understand and would refuse.

FTW!

this is not unethical. he has a 30 day return olicy. he is not trying to cheat them by returning a older unit in the box.

a place has it cheaper. BB should pricmatch if not return it and go buy the other one.

 Excellent advice.

There is no ethical conflict here.

I see no problems, and have done it before. Gave the previous place the opportunity to match after the purchase, and they didn't want to. Meanwhile I got a better price and extras from the other place. Returned the sealed unit back to the first place.

Good advice (does BB offer price matching?). If they don't do price matching then just return the TV. You are allowed to return it (within 30 days afaik) so there is no reason to feel bad.

Returning the unopened box (while ultimately being the best situation for BB) is still not the right thing to do.

i don't see an ethical problem with this. best buy gets a new TV in box. their costs are zero minus the re-stocking time, which is nothing.

Maybe i'm missing something, but:

Why don't you return the item you bought at Best Buy to them? I don't remember there being a 15% restocking fee for opened TVs.

If it is same UPC, you are good to go...BB will not care and then they wont lose $ on that TV. Sounds good to me!

Becuase that would mean unhooking everything that he already set up, repacking it in the box, etc and then taking it to best buy; THEN setting up the new one...

Its easier for everyone involved if he asks BB to take the CC one.. But they probably won't, becuase they are boneheads

BB pricematches all their HD tv's so if you bought an HD tv you are good
if not then yes they will take it back as long as the box and item # is the same
