I don't see how it would be illegal if they accepted it. Aren't computer systems advanced enough to tell whether or not that actual game was sold at one of their stores?

Anyway, I can live with store credit. I just usually don't shop at walmart, but it is true I can just buy a game there when I want

It's ENTIRELY illegal and if you can't see why and are a grown adult that's simply pathetic.
I'm actually amazed at the ATOT responses thus far. Normally the OP would get chastised for suggesting this. Maybe because its Walmart?

Just remember one thing. Karma is a bitch. What you are doing is not only highly unethical but it is also illegal.

If you ran a store and people returned goods to you that they didn't buy there but you have to sell how would you feel? You sure aren't making any money at all on it.

Aren't computer systems advanced enough... You KNOW it wasn't bought there, and yet you don't know the answer to that question? When they ring up your purchase, they scan the UPC. Most stores use the UPC that is already on the product, some put their own barcode over it. Most stores can't tell if you bought the product there, which is why they require a receipt. Walmart is more lenient, probably in part becasue they know their prices are the lowest on most items, so it's not really to your advantage to buy something elsewhere and return it there.

If it is any OPENED Software or Game, they will only allow an EVEN EXCHANGE (same title). Doesnt matter if you have receipt or not. YMMV with Walmart but any other store will only do an even exchange with same title only.

I only know like 2 Walmarts in the Bay Area but maybe that's because I shop at Target usually.

Now Costco to me is heaven in return policy. Last time I forgot my receipt for my camcorder I was returning (seriously I'm not pulling crap like the OP is) and they told me I would only get store credit. Apparently I just lie in these situations and I said "I called in earlier this afternoon and they said they could pull it up and credit it back to my card." The lady then asked for my card and put it back on my card =). (I didn't call in).

So are you saying Walmart is more lenient than Costco? ^^

I know tons of people who buy laptops and return them every 6 months at Costco. I frown at that because come on.... what kind of nerd overclocker would do that (me)? =P Plus it's just immoral.

You might not ever realize this, but there's a reason they accept them and give you store credit. Credit you must spend in their store. Odds of you getting something for the exact same price and leaving without ever coming back is slim. They do this for good reason, and it's to keep customers and get new customers. They set limits because they can't afford to do it for everyone all the time, but they will a few times to keep your business.

Someone asked about me owning a store and accepting returns on items I didn't sell...that completely depends on my sales volume, number of stores, and a 101 other things. In many cases, yes, I would take it back because I can either sell it to someone else, or return it for credit to my distributor. Why? Because the guy that returned the item will think of my store at some point in the future and/or tell others. It's advertising.

One time, when i was on vacation, i needed a dvd player for my hotel room. So, i went to walmart, bought a DVD player for $399, watched some movies for a week, and returned it. But i did have the receipt...

It's also the reason why lots of stores have to be harsh about returns. People try to return things all the time they bought somewhere else (usually on sale cheaper, thus making them money), or that they stole previously (once again, making money). It's totally illegal, not to mention downright wrong. Give it a shot if you want, but I certainly hope the on-duty manager tells you to sit and spin.

ok I back off a little after than explanation, and that does make good business sense. keeps your name in good standing with the customer and like you said, they have to buy stuff there. but I still don't think it is atotally right thing for the OP to do.

Well I am glad. To the other guys bashing me, quit crying. If Walmart does not want stuff like this to happen(which apparently they probably do since they only give store credit) they would create a stronger policy. Why doesn't somebody post what law this is breaking. Anyone who says this is like stealing is absolutely insane.

Thanks for the help guys

I've done it with several DVDs that I received for Christmas. Gave store credit on a gift card that I later used as Sams Club.
