Can I remove a COA from a computer?

I am trying to sell a laptop that has both XP Tablet and Vista Ultimate COA's on it. The buyer doesn't want Vista Ultimate, and as such wants a discount. Can I remove the COA from the laptop and keep it with the software? My guess is it will be a pain to remove. But my question is whether or not that is legitimate/allowed.

The Vista Ultimate was a seperately purchased DVD, after the purchase of the laptop.

AFAIK if the Vista Ultimate version is retail it can be legally installed on any machine as long as it's only on 1 machine at a time.

Retail versions don't have COA stickers. Only OEM versions come with stickers.

If the Vista was activated, you can't "legally" transfer the OEM Vista license to any other computer, so you might was well leave the sticker intact.

Something else to consider is that the version of Vista may be locked into the bios of the laptop and may not work on other hardware...I'm not saying that is definite, but its a possibility.

Check to see if it will work on other hardware before granting the discount or removing the COA.

It appears the Vista Ultimate DVD came with the COA on the back of the DVD case and the guy I bought the laptop from thought he was doing me a favor by moving the sticker to the laptop itself. My preference remains to sell it all together. But if I have to discount it, I'll sell it without the Vista DVD/COA/Install and keep it for myself. I'm assuming the issues of legally selling it make it not worthwhile, in spite of my reluctance to inherit a copy of vista ultimate at what the buyer views as a reasonable discount (aka retail price for vista ultimate)

It's not locked to any BIOS, luckily.

thanks for the help guys

Good point. I didn't remember that. 😉 Thanks for the correction.

If he wants $400 off for that, find another buyer (IMHO)... Is it in the FS forum here?
