Can I recover files from a previous installation of WinXP?

I have one partition on this disk. I reinstalled WinXP on this partition that already had WinXP on it. I believe I also reformatted the disk before installation. My question is if there's a way I can recover the files from the previous installation? Am I dead meat?

what sort of files are you wanting to find? Did you format over pics of your kids? Your only wedding photos?
There is software available which can restore /find/recover many if not all of the files you are looking for.

There are others available which explicitly say they can recover files from formatted drives too, but you might have to fork over some cash.
