Hi out there,

I am a huge fan of the discovery channel! I really love the shows! Unfortunately I am sometimes not able to watch them and sometimes they are not available in the internet, therefore I'd like to ask if it is possible to record them somehow? I know it may occurs as an simple questions, however I am a newbie with electronics in general!
Thank you for any suggestions you can provide!

Yep VCR is way to go. Head to any electronics store and you should be able to pick one up if you don't have one. The newer fancy ones even let you set you a start and end time so you can have it record a hockey game while you're away for example. Technology is great and has come a long way.

I do my own handwritten transcripts for all Discovery shows; I may be willing to share them with you. Which show(s) are you specifically interested in?

The one pictured is the VHS type. There is a better technology of VCR called Beta. Make sure to buy that type. The tapes are smaller and the resolution is better. It is a win-win.

Bah.. Beta? You want a VHS-C and a tripod. Just mount that in front of the TV screen.

It's called a DVR. The first one was TiVo that came out circa 2000. Computers can record too. It's called a HTPC (Home Theater PC) http://forums.anandtech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61

OP, has no SEO hidden links and doesn't show up on the stop forum spam list, but I'm curios what part of the world she is located in.

What a coincidence; my wife painstakingly recreates every frame of every Discovery show in a combination of watercolor and macaroni art. We could make a flipbook and I'll record your transcripts in a high falsetto, and BAM; Discovery Channel on demand.

I can vouch for this, Beta Max rocks!

Or you could go all-out and get a High Def VCR
http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HMDH40000U-D-VHS-Digital-Recorder/dp/B0000ACY2B

(Although it requires a source outputting FireWire or (u encoded?) QAM MPEG2

What an odd question. Even my 92 year old Grandma knows how to record shows off the TV.

OP needs something like a DVR or DVD recorder. A lot of cable and satellite boxes do allow you to plug a USB hard drive into the back for recording, or have a DVR built in.

The discovery channel stopped being the discovery channel like 15 years ago when garbage and crap and bullshit started to fill time blocks instead of nonfiction television.

What are you talking about? It's the finest programming available that can be cheaply filmed in Alaska. Deadliest Catch, Gold Rush, Flying Wild Alaska, Into Alaska, Alaska The Last Frontier, Alaskan Bush People, Buying Alaska, Edge of Alaska, Bering Sea Gold, Klondike, Yukon Men, a dozen more shows filmed in Northern Canada or the North Atlantic, and special episodes of all their other regularly scheduled programs that take place in Alaska because it's important for the Mythbusters to determine if explosions still look cool in a sub-zero environment. How does that not hold universal appeal?

There's something called a DVD recorder now too. Sort of like a VHS recorder, but it records digitally to DVDs.

You can do even better if you can get a ClearQAM signal, but the chances of that are pretty small. :(
