Can I put PC2100 ECC RAM in an 800MHz (pc3200) system?

I got a Dell 400SC on the cheap. It came with 128MB of PC3200, but I have 512MB of PC2100 sitting around. This is primarily going to be a linux file server, but I'm going to occasionally dual-boot it to XP so I need more than 128MB.

OK to use PC2100 ECC RAM in a PC3200 system?

Thanks in advance.

In theory, yes. However:

a) the motherboard/memory controller in the 400SC must be able to handle running async (that is, PC2100 RAM on a system with, presumably, a 400Mhz FSB). Or else your PC2100 would need to be able to clock up to PC3200 speeds (unlikely).

b) the motherboard/memory controller in the 400SC must be able to handle ECC RAM (it won't use the ECC bits in any case, but some older memory controllers won't work with ECC RAM at *all*).

Some searching might be able to answer these questions.
